Non for Profit Organizations

The tax code list more than twenty types of organizations eligible and can qualify for exemption under Section 501of the Internal Revenue Code. The list include several types of corporations, churches, ministries, community service organizations, schools, senior homes, foundations, booster clubs, veterans organizations, daycare centers, shelters, associations, and many others.

The benefits of gaining "Exempt Status" include:

  • Exemption from paying Federal Income Tax

  • Donations and supports received from the public up to certain amounts become deductible from donors' tax liability

  • Qualifying for lower postal rates

The majority of organizations gains the exempt status under Section 501(c)(3); being the section applicable to charitable and religious organizations.  Such (501(c)(3) organizations can further receive certain benefits from food banks and such.
