How much does it cost to use a CPA for preparing your tax return?

The cost of for preparing an individual tax, form 1040 with schedules A, B, and a limited Schedule-D averages about $250.  A complex individual tax return that include a Sole Proprietor business return Schedule-C, and the required self-employment schedule will increase the average cost by an additional $150 on an average. Adding other business schedules such as E and F to an individual return would also increase the complexity of the return and the cost of preparation by an additional $100 on an average.

The average cost for preparing a business return including Corporation, S-Corporation, Partnership, Estate, Trust, Gift, or a Non-for-profit organization return is $500 on an average. The increased or decreased complexity of the return would increase or reduce the cost of preparation accordingly.
